After that, he joined the Imperial Technical School at Reichenberg, where he pursued detailed studies in electrical engineering.

He started at Jacob Lohner & Co., where he designed the Lohner-Porsche, a hybrid car first presented in 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris. Here, he created a hybrid version of the vehicle with an avant-garde drive system. His first career set a firm base from which technical skills combined with visionary ideas and elements typical of the later work. 

His tenure at Austro-Daimler furthered his reputation as a mastermind of automotive design. He was responsible for developing several successful and innovative consumer models and overseeing several victories with racing cars. Notably, under his leadership, Austro-Daimler Sascha has won multiple races, such as the grueling Targa Florio in Sicily, which was more of a display of car engineering than anything else—yet also more of showing skills in optimizing performance and reliability.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Porsche’s career accelerated as he took on roles that pushed the boundaries of automotive engineering. After the Second World War, Ferdinand Porsche had a few hiccups, including serving a brief jail term during the denazification period. But his career never really stalled.

He founded Porsche AG in 1948, together with his son Ferry Porsche. It was in 1948 when the company’s first car, the Porsche 356, graced the scene, but this was merely a prelude to an array of the best and most creative products. Its success brought the famous Porsche 911, which was taken to the market in 1963. The car was designed by Ferdinand’s grandson, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, and it became the model that would later be the brand flag and a symbol of sports car excellence. 

The 911 had an unusual rear-engine layout and an air-cooled flat-six engine—unusual for that moment.
